Monkeys rescued from the pet trade in Mexico often arrive with deep physical and behavioural challenges shaped by years of inadequate care. The Elgin Centre works with the Akumal Monkey Sanctuary to develop a clear philosophy of care that gives these animals genuine pathways to thrive in managed settings. Together we focus on evidence-based standards for housing, social grouping, enrichment, and daily husbandry—ensuring that each monkey’s individual needs are understood and met. The goal is not simply survival in captivity, but a life of meaningful welfare, stability, and the best possible quality of life after rescue.
