The Elgin Centre partnered with Seoul Grand Park Zoo to support the successful social introductions of a chimpanzee group and to address the complex social needs of their orangutans. Drawing on evidence-based approaches to primate social dynamics, the work focused on careful planning of introductions, ongoing assessment of group stability, and practical strategies that allow individuals to form healthy relationships in managed care. The goal was to move beyond basic containment and create conditions in which both chimpanzees and orangutans can experience meaningful social lives—reducing stress, supporting natural behaviours, and improving long-term welfare.
