Across West Africa, monkeys are kept as pets in conditions that can never meet their complex physical, social, and psychological needs. Some of these animals are later drawn into the global pet trade. The Elgin Centre’s Pet Monkey Initiative works to interrupt this at its source. Through a structured outreach programme, local partners meet owners, share clear evidence-based information about why monkeys cannot thrive in ordinary human care, and connect them with professional organisations that can assist with responsible release or sanctuary placement. In some cases, this work creates the conditions for monkeys to be returned to the wild. Each engagement is carefully documented, ensuring transparency and accountability. The initiative operates nationwide and reflects The Elgin Centre’s commitment to practical, science-based conservation that gives these animals a genuine chance at a better life.
